Methods to Improve the Relationship between You and Your Dog

A dog may have problems such as biting, guarding food, and being disobedient. You may have invited a dog trainer to your home or sent your dog to a training school, but you may not have achieved the desired results. As a dog owner, have you ever thought that you might try some methods to train your beloved dog at home to make your relationship better?

Here we would like to share the experience of one of our pet owners, and these methods have really worked for his dog.

Heto is a mixed breed of a Samoyed and a Siberian Husky. Its owner has made many efforts and attempts to improve their relationship and address Heto's various bad habits. Finally, their relationship has become much better. Below are some effective methods from Heto's owner. We hope that your relationship with your dog will also improve.

01 Fundamental Principle - Build Trust
The process of training a dog is actually a process of building trust. You need to recognize that a dog is an independent individual and has an equal relationship with its owner. It has its own thoughts and needs, and the right to express and have those needs met. It should not be treated as an accessory or even a toy of the owner, only having the status of obedience and being dominated.
Based on this understanding, the owner respects every thought and action of Heto. Instead of stopping it roughly, the owner tries to understand the needs behind its behavior first, and solve those needs at the root. When a dog's needs can be well understood and met, it will naturally feel a sense of security and belonging at home.

02 Provide Timely Feedback
Dogs do not have logical thinking and thus cannot form an understanding of cause and effect. Therefore, for any behavior a dog exhibits, the owner should give feedback immediately to help the dog form an instant physical memory and conditioned reflex. Never try to educate or even beat and scold the dog after the wrong behavior has occurred. In this way, the dog will not understand the reason at all and will develop strong hostile feelings, thinking that the owner will attack it without reason, thus losing trust.

03 Keep the Feedback Simple
Dogs cannot understand the content of language, but they can remember simple command words. The simpler, the better, and don't change them frequently. For positive commands, you can use words like "Good" and "yes", and for negative commands, commonly used words are "NO" and "Stop".

04 Meet the Dog's Needs in a Timely Manner
Many dogs may have problems such as guarding food or toys when they are young. In fact, this is because they are worried about losing them or not getting them. This is also the reason why as dogs grow up, they gradually stop guarding food, because they know that food will come on time and there is no need to worry. For example, for a toy that a dog has found or even snatched on its own, the owner had better not take it away roughly. A better way is to let the dog play with it at ease or use snacks to lure the dog to give up the toy voluntarily. If a dog is in a state of worrying about its toy being taken away for a long time, its behavior of guarding toys and extreme violent behavior will become more and more intense.
Try to meet the dog's needs within your ability so that it can fully feel loved. Gradually, it will become more peaceful, willing to wait and share.
